When Disaster Strikes

When a disaster strikes, whether it be a terrorist bombing, planes driven into buildings or a killer hurricane, the truth about people is revealed.

After 9/11, the city of New York, came together as one to help those in need. It was the people themselves that started the recovery action to help those trapped beneath the collapsed tower.

Now that Hurricane Katrina has devastated New Orleans, we see what that town's people are made of. We have a lot of people out helping other, some trying to bring food and water to those in need, but we are also seeing the animal in people rising up to the surface. We are hearing people whining and crying that it all the Gov't fault and not doing a damn thing to help themselves, we are seeing looting for items not needed for survival, we are seeing shootings at aide workers and helicopters trying to help, and this demonstrates that New Orleans is populated by people that are barely covered by a thin veneer of civility.

A crisis can either bring out the humanity in people as we saw in NYC or the animal as we are seeing in New Orleans. Let's hope the rest of America act like the people of NYC if another disaster strikes, and not like the animals of New Orleans.
